You are in Charge of your Health
Protection. Safety. Defense. These are some of the words to describe the role our immune system plays in our body. It works as part of the whole to protect us from pathogens – viruses, bacteria, fungus and anything that can cause an imbalance in our ability to function. Without it, it would be impossible to protect ourselves from disease.
Despite popular belief, humans are not prone to disease! Genetics may predispose you to certain ailments and unfortunate events may lead to a life of suffering but in its natural state, the human body is capable of thriving – when we take care of it.
In the world we currently live in, it is almost impossible to avoid exposure to things that are not good for us. Step outside and you have polluted air. Eat take out and you have heart disease. Work long hours and you have sleep deprivation. Everywhere we turn there is something that can cause an ill effect on our minds, bodies and spirits. One of the most beneficial things you can do to keep all of this in positive perspective is to take care of your natural defense system, your immune system.
The immune system works around the clock to fight off anything that does not belong. Think of it as the protection leader, the one in charge of keeping the body fully functioning as a whole, responding automatically to protect us when something does not seem right. In order to keep it healthy we have to make healthy choices.
Do you suffer from fatigue? Do you wish you had more energy? Do you get sick often? Do you dread the fall and winter months? This may be a huge sign that your immune system is in need of some serious support.
Overall health is maintained when we realize exactly what our body is, a host. Comprised of systems with organs, cells, tissues and bones, our body is a miracle vehicle for hosting our existence. When one part of the whole is compromised or weakened, it cannot function at its best. Below are some ways you can strengthen or boost your immune system to keep your defenses strong:
- Alkalize your diet by incorporating raw foods and juices
- Exercise to stimulate energy
- Try yoga and meditation to reduce stress
- Get enough sleep
- Avoid processed foods and refined sugars
- Limit your intake of caffeine and alcohol
- Do not smoke
The next time you feel like you are approaching illness, remember this blog. Disease is caused by an imbalance in the body and the inability to fight off abnormal functioning. You are in charge of your health and have the ability to help your body, your host, function at an exceptional level of health.
